2007 Awards

ATLANTA - Familiar with garnering some of Georgia’s top amateur golf awards this year, Mariah Stackhouse added three more honors to her already burgeoning trophy case, after taking home the Metro Atlanta Automobile Dealers Association (MAADA) Award and two more awards at the annual Atlanta Junior Golf Awards Banquet at Druid Hills Golf Club.

The Riverdale native, who has performed resoundingly on some of the Peach State’s top courses this year, also earned Player of the Year honors in the Girls 7-18 Open division and was formally presented with the Giddings Cup - the association’s top trophy as the Grand Championship winner. Not to be outdone, Canton’s Randy White accepted the first-ever Aroha “Roh” Wezner Trophy – honoring the soon-to-be departing executive director – as the organization’s top player who notched the lowest scoring average during the year. He was also recognized as the Player of the Year in the Boys 15-18 Open division, and formally accepted the Giddings Cup.

Giving the evening’s opening remarks, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle addressed more than 250 attendees and provided a personal perspective into the game he most enjoys with his family.

In keeping with the tradition of the evening, juniors were recognized for their success in the following categories: All-Atlanta Junior Golf Teams, comprised of the top-10 juniors in the Open and the top-five juniors in the Club divisions; All-Atlanta Junior Golf Academic Teams, recognizing the area’s high school boys and girls, who have excelled in the classroom during the previous school year with a 3.5 or higher grade point average; Overall Boys and Girls Grand Champions; and Players of the Year, boys and girls in the Open divisions, who completed the year on top. (Award winners are listed below.)

Additionally, special recognition awards were presented to individuals, including the Metro Atlanta Automobile Dealers Association (MAADA) Award, given to Stackhouse for accruing the highest point total at the end of the season with 115 points. The Larry Nelson Sportsmanship Award presented by the AT&T Classic, identified two individuals who demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship as voted on by summer staff members, and this year’s honorees were Gainesville’s Landry Haynes and Roswell’s Shea Sylvester. The Most Improved Male and Female Awards were given to Open division players Austin Graham, from Powder Springs, and Jessica Haigwood, from Roswell, as the players who most improved their scoring averages from 2006 to this year; and the first-ever Aroha “Roh” Wezner Trophy, for the junior golfer who amassed the lowest combined scoring average, rounded out the evening’s honors with White accepting.
