2004 Awards
ATLANTA – The 2004 Atlanta Junior Golf
Association Awards Banquet was held Sunday, October 3rd at Druid
Hills Golf Club.
The annual awards banquet honors both the
juniors who perform well on the golf course during the most recent
golf season and those student athletes who excel in the class
room.
This year’s Guest Speaker was Ms. Martha
Kirouac, Captain of the victorious 2004 US Curtis Cup team. Using
a slide show of pictures from the Curtis Cup in England, Ms.
Kirouac emphasized the opportunities out there in the Amateur golf
world for not only adults, but juniors also. The oldest player on
the 2004 US Curtis Cup team was 22 and the youngest player,
Michelle Wie, was 14.
The first awards of the evening were presented
to the 2004 Overall Boys and Girls Grand Champions, Hudson Keener
and Emily Cross. Next, the 2004 All-Academic and All-AJGA Teams
were announced. Below are this year’s winners.

The AJGA Sportsmanship Award Presented by BellSouth Classic is
presented each year to the male and female junior golfers who are
believed by the AJGA staff to best exemplify good sportsmanship.
This year’s winners are Greg Detwieler and Chelsea Bonk.
The next three awards were presented to the Most Improved player
from the Aires Program (a collaborative effort introducing
competitive golf to the youth in the minority communities of metro
Atlanta) and the Most Improved Male and Female players. Philip
Allen was honored as the Most Improved Player in the Aires
Program, improving his 2004 stroke average to 78.2 from 2003’s
average of 82.8. James White, Jr. was the most improved
male, improving his 2003 stroke average of 75.86 to 72.38 in the
2004 season. The Most Improved female award went to Emily Cross
whose 2004 stroke average of 77.43 was almost 10 strokes
better than her 2003 average of 87. (Note: These figures are based
on mathematical calculations that take into consideration the fact
that it is more difficult to improve your stroke average from 75
to 72 than it is to improve it from 100 to 90).
The final award of the evening, named for our Presenting Sponsor,
Metro Atlanta Automobile Dealer’s Association, was awarded to the
player who had earned the most points over the entire season. The
winner of this award was in the Advanced Boys 14 Division and
earned a perfect score of 200 points for the 2004 Season, winning
all six of his regular season events and winning his age Division
at the Grand Championship. The 2004 winner of the MAADA Award is
James White, Jr.
